First called Mule Camp Springs, Gainesville was settled near the crossing of 2 Indian trails in the 1800s. Less than 3 years after the creation of Hall County, Mule Camp Springs was chartered as Gainesville in 1821. It was given the name "Gainesville" in honor of General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812.

The Gold Rush began in nearby Lumpkin County in 1828 and brought many new settlers. By 1849 Gainesville established as a resort center. In 1871 the

Airline Railroad, later named the Southern, heralded a new era of progress.

Gainesville has maintained and built upon its historical legacy as a regional transportation and trade center for almost 2 centuries.
